What to see and do in La Bastide Clairence?
Situated 60 kilometers from our Hendaye campsite, La Bastide Clairence is one of France’s most beautiful villages. This medieval town of 1,000 inhabitants, which celebrated its 700th anniversary in 2012, attracts thousands of visitors every year with a passion for crafts and heritage. A visit here generally gives passing travelers the sensation of stepping back in time to the Middle Ages. It’s easy to imagine what life was like for our Basque ancestors in the 14th century. From the pint at the inn to the donkey milk tasting, this plunge into the heart of history will leave no one indifferent.
Bastide Clairence is a veritable breeding ground for artisans of all kinds. People come from all over Europe to discover – or rediscover – trades that have all but disappeared. Indeed, the village perpetuates a tradition deeply rooted in the heart of the Basque people: keeping crafts alive. Whether you’re a luthier, a glassmaker, a featherworker or a stone engraver, all these professionals in the village center are waiting to show you their specialties and, why not, introduce you to their art. To meet them, nothing could be easier: head for the Place des Arceaux, once home to fairs and markets, now home to workshops and shops.
And if that’s all it takes to win you over, if you’re a lover of old stones, you’re in for a treat. Picturesque alleyways, half-timbered houses and historic monuments bear witness to the Basques’ deep attachment to their heritage.
You’ll also be seduced by the beauty of the verdant landscape that surrounds this bastion of another time, and by its cuisine. There’s no shortage of good places to discover the culinary specialties of the Basque Country.
Finally, to complete your journey back in time, take a detour to the 19th century and the trinquet court dating from 1889, to visit the jeu de paume hall, the forerunner of tennis. An initiation with family or friends will leave you with unforgettable memories. Today, 70% of the village’s inhabitants are not Basque. This speaks volumes about the quality of life at Bastide Clairence and the welcome extended to visitors. More than a tradition, it’s a state of mind.
