Another must-see town is Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Just 10 minutes from your mobile home (or chalet), come and discover the heart and soul of the Basque Country. Stop by the Halles market, stroll around Place Louis XIV or treat yourself to one of the city’s specialties: the almond macaroon. And you can’t leave without discovering one of the must-sees of Basque culture, part of Cesta Punta, at Jaï Alaï.
A little further afield, 25 minutes from Hendaye and Camping Village Eskualduna, the seaside resort of Biarritz has been a must for over two centuries. Camping in the Spanish Basque Country: must-see sites
San Sebastián, the jewel of the Spanish Basque coast, is less than 30 minutes from Hendaye and Camping Village Eskualduna. Don’t miss La Concha Bay: a semicircular sandy beach lined with historic buildings and the famous Paseo de la Concha, offering breathtaking panoramic views over the bay. At one end, you’ll find a small fishing port with colorful boats, the facades of fishermen’s houses, the aquarium and Mount Urgull.
If you’re looking for an apéritif on a terrace, you’re just a few steps away, in the heart of the old town, whose many narrow streets are packed with stores and bars where you can enjoy delicious tapas, called pintxos in Basque. Before setting off again, the Victoria Eugenia Theatre, the Hotel Maria Christina and the La Perla spa are well worth a visit. Note that for 5 euros, a rail shuttle called El Topo will take you from Hendaye and back in 30 minutes.
A hundred kilometers to the west, Bilbao is a must for anyone wanting to get an idea of the dynamism, culture and identity of the Basque Country. A symbol of the Basque capital’s recent transformation, the Guggenheim Museum, a veritable work of architectural art with 33,000 titanium plates, stands proudly on Calle Iparraguirre. Another of Bilbao’s curiosities is its estuary. A stroll here will delight fans of architecture. The bridges and footbridges overlooking the river are real gems. Bizkaia is also a World Heritage Site. The estuary walk will take you to the old town, a lively district loved by its inhabitants. Here you’ll find everything you need to quench your thirst for festivity and delicacies.
Your vacation in a campsite in the Spanish Basque Country with swimming pool
A stone’s throw from the Eskualduna campsite, just across the border, Fontarrabie (“Fonta” for those in the know), is another place not to be missed for its typical, festive atmosphere. By road, or by boat from Hendaye, this ancient fortified town boasts a remarkably well-preserved urban heritage. The historic center, with its labyrinth of cobbled streets lined with colorful shuttered houses, is a festive place par excellence. For atmosphere and tapas, head for the streets around San Pedro and Santiago. Another of the town’s assets is that it’s home to a number of young chefs who have gone on to gain experience in the finest restaurants and have returned to make Fonta a Mecca of Basque gastronomy.
Finally, Guernica and Pamplona are two other Spanish Basque strongholds well worth a visit.
Camping Ascain on the Basque Coast
Ascain is about 20 minutes from Camping Village Eskualduna (4 stars). Located at the foot of La Rhune, the emblematic mountain of the Basque Country, with its many prehistoric remains (megaliths and cromlechs). Crossed by the River Nivelle, this picturesque village is the ideal starting point for your ascent of La Rhune. But you can also opt for the Little Rack Train, which dates back to 1924. From the summit, you can contemplate the entire Basque Coast as far as the Landes in the north and the Cantabrian coast in the south. A must!
Discover the Ascain area
The Basque Country is also home to a number of villages ranked among the most beautiful in France. Not far from Ascain, you’ll find the villages of Sare and Ainhoa. Make the most of your camping holiday in Ascain to visit these incredibly beautiful villages. If you prefer to get closer to the ocean, Saint Jean de Luz is less than fifteen minutes from Ascain. For those who want to get as close to Spain as possible, Hendaye is less than half an hour away.

Our campsite near Ascain is located on the Hendaye beach (with free shuttle bus in season) in the heart of the Basque Country. Its geographical proximity to Ascain makes it an ideal stopover on the way to other villages such as Sare, Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle and Espelette.
Bassussarry is about 25 minutes from the 4-star Village Eskualduna campsite in Hendaye. The village lies on gentle hills crossed by the Nive and Adour rivers and their tributaries. The church, the pediment on the square, all the ingredients of a Basque village. Bassussarry also boasts a magnificent 18-hole golf course. As for the road leading to the village, it is, like the rest of the Basque Country, enchanting! This small village is ideally located between Biarritz,Anglet and Bidart.
Just 40 minutes from Camping Village Eskualduna (4 stars), Cambo-les-Bains offers tradition and tranquility. This small spa town in the inland Basque Country is lush with greenery and rivers. It is located near the towns of Ustaritz and Espelette. It is also known for its art de vivre and gastronomy. Lovers of culture and architecture will discover the Villa Arnaga, Edmond Rostand’s famous listed home, with its “Extraordinary Garden”.
Situated 20 minutes from Camping Village Eskualduna (4 stars) in Hendaye, between Arbonne and Bidart, Ahetze has the Basque and medieval charm and tranquility of the inland. Its Labourdine-style houses date from the 17th and 18th centuries. On this former stopover on the Camino de Compostela, you’ll discover the church of Saint-Martin and its astonishing processional cross (15th century) adorned with bells. If you’re a bargain hunter, the village is also popular for its monthly garage sales and flea markets! It’s also a good spot for walkers (you’ll enjoy superb panoramic views), and fishing enthusiasts.
Camping Eskualduna is located 33 km from Ainhoa in the heart of the Basque Country.
Approximately 35 minutes from the 4-star Village Eskualduna campsite, Ainhoa boasts one of the finest views of the Xareta cirque and the Nivelle valley as far as Saint-Jean-de-Luz. The Maison du patrimoine retraces the history of the village in sound and images. The Ainhoa forest is home to an abundance of wildlife (roe deer, wild boar, birds, etc.). This Basque village deserves its “Most Beautiful Villages in France” label!
The beautiful town of Anglet is about 25 minutes from the 4-star CampingVillage Eskualduna in Hendaye, near Biarritz and Bayonne. Located on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean and the Chiberta forest, Anglet is a relaxed, sporty town. Well-equipped with cycle paths and other green ways for walkers, it also offers a thalassotherapy center, horse-riding and a golf course. Famous for its sandy beaches and spectacular waves, it attracts surfers from all over the world. There’s something for everyone. Naturally green, Anglet invites young and old to discover its educational trail: the Izadia ecological park.

Arbonne is about 25 minutes from the 4-star Village Eskualduna campsite. Neighboring Biarritz and Bidart, this Basque village is built around the church of Saint Laurent (whose first stones were assembled as early as the year 1000!) and its small cemetery, which boasts tombstones from the 16ᵉ century. The traditional pediment completes the portrait of this typical Basque village. Don’t miss the Benoîterie and its permanent exhibition on the history of Arbonne.
